In the third week of September 2025, the KOEN Institute held its first hut hike at Hochschwab in Styria and Schneeberg in Lower Austria. Led by Wolfgang List and David Ortner, the group spent five days hiking to the Voisthalerhütte at 1654m on Hochschwab, designed by Dietger Wissounig Architects and awarded the GerambRose 2024, the Glashaus of the Steirereck on the Pogusch, designed by PPAG Architects and awarded the GerambRose 2022, and the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben at 1250m at the foot of the Schneeberg, planned by Baukult and awarded the Holzbaupreis 2012. Unfortunately, the peak of the Hochschwab at 2277m and the nearby Schiestlhaus at 2156m had to be omitted due to stormy weather. Lectures by the managers of the Voisthalerhütte and the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben, including a tour of the commercial kitchens, storage rooms, and technical facilities in the basements of both buildings, gave the students interesting and informative insights into the planning, operation, and maintenance of mountain huts. While hiking from hut to hut, there was also plenty of time to talk and discuss the mountain landscape and architecture they experienced. In five days, hey walked almost 100km and climbed over 3000m.

Participants: Valentin Angerer, Lea Ehrenhöfer, Fabian Fabry, Ivan Ginev, Julia Hackl, Marcel Hausner, Marcel Huber, Jakob Kulmer, Wolfgang List, Clara Miggitsch, Andreas Stefan Nätscher, Fabian Obenaus, David Ortner, Hannah-Lena Reum, Ana Sekavčnik, Timon Trattner, Mesude Tuncer, Emanuel Unterüberbacher and Niklas Zeisler
