Sketching is an elementary component of teaching at the KOEN Institute. All students are given a sketchbook on the first day of their architectural studies. The sketchbook consists of several small notebooks which can be exchanged for the various courses at the KOEN Institute and which must be filled in by the students over the course of a year. The personal sketchbook is intended to provoke a routine in sketching. It is not important to create beautiful drawings, but to develop sketches in your own style that convey as much information as possible. Regular sketching trains analysis by focusing on the essentials and teaches recognition. The sketches also function as a means of communication between students and lecturers, a kind of personal sign language that must be learned and practiced.
