In the second semester, students deal with the important task of designing and building in existing buildings. The conversion of the second floor of Kronesgasse from a university building into a contemporary school building is the main task of the construction seminar. In a first phase the students have to analyse the constructive structure of the building which is over 100 years old. In a second step new educational spaces are planned into the existing small studios and the corridor. They are asked which changes are easy and which are more difficult to implement. In this way, the students learn to work with the existing building and develop a feeling for the fact that every design decision, especially when planning in existing buildings, also results in varying degrees of structural effort. This results in a better perception and appreciation of the spaces in which they work on a daily basis.
