Garage Grande - Preservation and adaptation of a parking garage

Can a vacant parking garage in a densely populated district be seen as an opportunity to revitalize a neighbourhood? The parking garage in Vienna's 16th district, called Garage Grande, has been sold and is expected to be demolished by the developer in the coming year and replaced by a new residential building. During the planning phase, this building will be used jointly by the neighborhood for a period of 3 years with the support of the area management. Within a very short space of time, the multi-storey parking lot has become a neighborhood meeting place with many different uses. The Garage Grande functions as a community space, but lacks the necessary multifunctional architecture to meet the ever-changing everyday needs of the motivated neighborhood. This work has set itself the task of finding this architecture and should serve as a positive example for future projects of this kind.
