Alternative Pedagogies in Architecture
In her dissertation Alternative Pedagogies in Architecture - Self-Directed Learning and Informal Building in 1960s Back-to-the-Land Communes, Christina Linortner explores forms of self-learning and -building by laypeople in the architecture of the counterculture using three selected case studies in the USA. The distinctive, hand-built structures in the communes formed an unique style and can be seen as precursors of communal and ecological building. While counterculture architecture occupies an outsider role in architectural historiography, the work shows, among other things, how the informal learning methods used by the communards were adopted by their contemporaries in various forms into the formal education system.
